Ottawa has announced funding to improve small craft harbours on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. The project includes repairs and reconstruction of the breakwater at the small craft harbour in Fortune, as well as dredging of the harbour basin in Burin. The funding aims to enhance maritime infrastructure and support local fishing communities (ntv.ca).
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson highlighted the importance of these improvements for safety and economic growth. The work will ensure better access for small vessels and improve conditions for fishermen. The dredging in Burin is expected to deepen the harbour, making it more accessible during seasonal changes.
The funding comes as part of a broader initiative to support coastal communities. Local officials welcomed the investment, noting its potential to boost tourism and fishing activities. The project is scheduled to begin in the coming months, with completion expected by the end of the year.
